However, I recently got the chance to see a Sea King helicopter at very close range whilst out walking near the coast and so I uploaded the videos to Youtube to see if I could make any money.

Despite the name of the videos, I feel I should point out that I believe the 'rescue' taking place was purely an exercise.
Well as can be seen from the videos, they have been up for over 2 months now and they have had very low traffic. In fact, combined the traffic is only about 60 views and considering that many of these views came right at the beginning it would indicate I will be waiting a very long time to make my first million from Youtube. There could be several reasons for this. Firstly, each Sea King video on Youtube seems to have only a small number of views (aside from a couple of videos of these helicopters crashing!). Secondly, I have done little by the way of backlinking etc to drive traffic to these videos over the alternative Sea King videos. Thirdly, I appreciate that these videos are of a rather poor quality. Therefore my experiment so far to see whether it is possible to make any money from Youtube has so far indicated that without traffic it isn't possible to get any earnings (rather like the web in general). However, I am not completely deterred and so I have uploaded a couple more videos, one of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta nightglow and one of a panoramic video of Falmouth, Cornwall.

You still have quite a bit of earnings from your other online ventures. How are the HubPages earnings following the Panda update? I am just starting to see an increase in traffic so maybe earnings will start to follow.
ReplyDeleteHi Kidgas, thanks for commenting. I do indeed continue to have decent earnings elsewhere however I am keen to diversify which is why I have looked at Youtube videos. As for Hubpages, since sub-domains etc my traffic is at all time highs with similar results with earnings (maybe slightly off the all time high but then it is yet to quite be the holiday season and also the profile of my traffic is slightly different from previously).
ReplyDeleteIt's always seemed to me that the way to make money from youtube is to film cute babies/cute kittens and cross your fingers hoping it will go viral. Of course there must be plenty of people using that strategy now, so I'm guessing cute babies are getting very competitive.
ReplyDeleteMore seriously, something I've thought about doing, but I'm too shy about recording my own voice (for some reason I sound like a slow 5 year old), is video tutorials about using different programs. For example I'd been watching a lot of photoshop tutorials for fun effects on pictures. Many of them have a lot of views. I've recently started using various free fractal generators, to make fractals for my Zazzle store and there are very few tutorials youtube or webpage on how to use these programs. Through trial and error I've managed to figure out how to use them and I reckon there could be some traffic to youtube tutorials about them. The advantage is you don't need to film outside, you just record what's on your computer screen. You just have to be confident about your voice as you explain what you are doing.
Perhaps you could make some tutorials about the various making money online schemes that you are using? Like a youtube review of "Top Cash Back?". Of course "make money online" is impossible to rank for, but you could make it more "niche".
